Daniel Avilan is a Venezuelan-Canadian singer, guitarist, and bandleader whose work bridges Latin American traditions, Afro-Caribbean music, jazz, and classical vocal training. With more than 25 years of performance experience, he has become recognized in Vancouver’s Latin and jazz scene for a voice marked by warmth, strength, clarity, and expressive depth.
Trained in the Bel Canto tradition, Daniel combines technical precision with a deeply rhythmic and emotionally direct approach to performance. His musical language draws from the Afro-Caribbean foundations of modern Latin music while remaining open to jazz improvisation, chamber-like nuance, and contemporary interpretation.
His repertoire spans Salsa, Son, Bolero, Cumbia, Merengue, Tango, Milonga, Venezuelan Parranda, Gaita Zuliana, and Joropo Llanero, alongside jazz standards and selected classical works by composers such as Mozart, Puccini, Rossini, and Massenet. Rather than treating these traditions as separate worlds, Daniel approaches them as interconnected musical lineages shaped by migration, memory, and cultural exchange.
Throughout his career, Daniel has performed with multiple ensembles and collaborative projects, earning recognition for performances that combine vocal sophistication with strong audience connection. Whether interpreting a jazz arrangement or an Afro-Caribbean standard, his artistic approach emphasizes musicality, elegance, and emotional authenticity.
As both performer and creative director, Daniel continues to develop projects that explore the dialogue between Latin musical heritage and contemporary jazz expression, bringing together tradition, improvisation, and storytelling into a distinctive artistic voice.
